T-5 days until Yoga Teacher Training begins!!

That’s right, ladies and gents, I am starting to train to be a yoga teacher (yogi) at the Yoga Room here in Nashville. I will be getting trained in Iyengar - which means I will get a deep understanding of how to correctly do poses and breath control. How did I come to this decision, you ask? Well in my last semester at Texas I took a yoga class for credit, and started getting hooked. From there I returned to Nashville and kept dabbling in and out of classes, until November of last year when I went through some rough stuff. At that point I began practicing much more, particularly looking forward to my classes with Gina at the YMCA in Green Hills. I asked her about where she got certified, and she gave me a lot of great resources. She kept asking every couple weeks what was up with me getting trained, and thanks to her being on my back, I really stuck to that idea. So, thanks Gina.

And thanks, Geeta. Geeta, my precious, awe-inspiring mentor from Texas furthered my decision as well. A few months ago - whoa, actually it was like March - I told her I wanted to get certified and she said, “Absolutely, 100% you need to do it.” Now, when Geeta says to do something, you do it. No questions. If she called me tomorrow and told me to wander in the desert on a vision quest I would put up a facebook status and a twitter stating, “Vision Quest, per Geeta” and peace out. So, the fact that Geeta was all about me doing this yoga training validated my investment and interest.

But now it’s here. 5 days to go.

The schedule is pretty intense. Friday nights 6-8pm, Saturdays 12-4pm, Sundays 9am-2pm. We meet three weekends a month until February. 200 hours of training.

I am heading into this training with one of my favorite poses in mind:

mmmm child's pose

Mmmm child’s pose. I always feel so reverent and calm in this pose. A lot of times it’s offered as a “break” during a practice, and I find that when I go into child’s pose I really take inventory of my body as well as take the time to appreciate where I’ve been and gain energy for where we’re going. You can also practice child’s pose with your arms back - laying on the ground by your legs - but I like the outstretched (pictured) version. If you asked me to get a  tatoo tomorrow that was yoga inspired I’d get a picture of child’s pose.

So, enjoying my breath. Getting excited. And moving into child’s pose, thinking about where I’ve been and where I’m going.
